Abstract

This article examines wage justice as an ethical and social issue within Islamic thought by analyzing workers’ wage practices in Batam City, Indonesia. Although Batam has experienced rapid industrial growth and relatively high minimum wages, workers continue to face delayed payments, inadequate living standards, contractual uncertainty, weak bargaining positions, and limited wage transparency. Using a qualitative case study based on interviews, observation, and document analysis, this study examines wage justice through Maqasid al-Shariah, particularly the protection of wealth (hifz al-mal), life (hifz al-nafs), and human dignity. The findings indicate that formal compliance with minimum wage regulations does not necessarily ensure substantive justice when workers remain economically insecure and socially vulnerable. The study proposes Hamumnomic as a conceptual framework for understanding economic anxiety arising from unstable, delayed, or insufficient wages. It also proposes the Wage Justice House as a collaborative mechanism for mediation, wage education, transparency, and stakeholder dialogue. The study contributes to Islamic thought by positioning Maqasid al-Shariah as an ethical framework for advancing fair labor relations, social justice, and human dignity in contemporary industrial society.
